Negative side of solar panels system?!

June 2, 2020

Is solar panels system worth using? This is the main question that people face with. There are two sides to anything and to solar energy too. Solar energy is considered the greenest technology so far. Even despite a few negative sides, it is the best way anyone can contribute to making our planet a better and a safer place.

High initial cost

High initial cost of purchasing solar panels is the biggest disadvantage of solar energy systems. In time this initial cost will recouped. After that, solar panel system will even bring profit for the surplus energy that will be sent to the grid (if the solar panels are connected to it). However, the initial cost is often too high for many people who consider implementing solar projects at their rooftops. It is the biggest reason of such slow development of solar energy sector. But, solar panels manufacturers have been working on cheaper technologies. The newest solar panels are a lot cheaper than the first ones. So, it is safe to say that in a few more years almost every family will be able to install at least a few solar panels on their rooftops.

Storing solar energy is expensive

During the daytime solar energy has to be used immediately after being generated. The surplus energy can be sent to the grid if the solar energy system is connected to the grid. Instead of sending the surplus energy to the grid, you can save and store the surplus in large batteries. These batteries will be charging during the day storing energy to spend during the night. Adding these batteries to the solar is a good thing to do. But they are really expensive. Also all batteries wear out with time. Replacing old batteries will also be expensive. That is why it is easier and cheaper to just use solar energy during the day and take electricity from the grid during the night. To reduce energy demand during the night, as an example, you can start doing laundry. Or doing the dishes in the dishwasher during the day instead of the night.

Solar systems are dependent on the weather

It is one of the biggest disadvantages of solar panels. During summer days they collect much more energy than during winter days. Unfortunately, there is not a way around this. So you will be saving more money on electrical bills during summer than in winter.

Solar panels may still be not completely pollution-free

Solar panels do not emit greenhouses gases when working (collecting and generating energy) unlike other energy sources. However, solar panel production can still cause damage to the environment if the manufacturing process is not organized with all possible safety measures. The thing is there are quite a few toxic materials that are used to manufacture solar panels. Any violation of safety procedures may pollute the environment.

High energy demand means more solar panels

This issue gets big for large households with high energy needs. The more power you need, the more panels you have to buy. Although, rooftops have limited space and you are not able to fit as many panels as you may need. The way out is to put some additional panels in the yard. But you have to place them in the sunniest places of the yard which may be complicated.

There is not a way to recycle solar panels

Yet. Solar energy industry is a relatively new one. Considering that solar panels last for 25-30 years, there are not many of them that need to be recycled. However, in 30-40 years it may become a major issue. The same as recycling of plastic has been to us. Hopefully, by that time solar panels manufacturers will figure out a way out of this. It means a safe and effective recycling process.
